3:10 to Yuma Review

So, I figured this is as good a place as any to post movie reviews.

I went to see 3:10 to Yuma on opening night (Friday, 9/7). At first, I thought it would be a split crowd bewteen 3:10 and “Shoot ‘em up.” Then I realized that westerns are not appreciated like they used to be.

When I went in to find a seat, there were only about 10 people in the theater (with enough seats for 200+).

However, the crowd size was not a good ruler to measure the quality of the movie. This was the first modern western I have seen in a long time. I honestly believe it isn’t possible to achieve the feel of an old-fashioned western. Like my dad says “The guns never ran out of ammo and there wasn’t any blood.”

The “R” rating is because of blood, violence and a few bad words. I think there was 1 “f-word” and 3 or so “s-words.” The gunshot wounds were rather graphic (maybe unnecessarily so).

The Storyline:
The storyline was simple, yet interesting. It was full of lessons in moral values and emotional moments.

The Acting:
The acting was better than most westerns, although I had a hard time with the actors being “cowboys.” The main antagonist (a famous coach robber – Ben Wade) was played by Russel Crowe. The “good guy” (a rancher desperate for money – Dan Evans) was played by Christian Bale (Batman). The 14 year old son wasn’t the best actor, but he was playing a 14 year old, so it was too bad.

Ability to Keep Attention:
I was on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. The suspense got stronger near the end when you started to wonder what the heck he was going to do.

Personal Favorites:

My favorite part of the whole movie was… I HAD NO IDEA what was going to happen. Even better, when it did happen, it was even more unexpected. This ending leaves ANY watcher with mixed feelings about the whole movie. But… I wont ruin that for you… go watch it!

This movie was a re-make of a 1957 movie with the same title. I have not seen the original, but I am very interested in checking it out soon.
